[Somewhere in another universe, an angelic messenger sneezed.]
Oh, they're not all so [Crowley raised an eyebrow at him with a look that clearly said "oh, really?" and the angel stammered.] ...bad.
We'll keep you under wraps as best we can should it come to that. A single being with the power to wipe out both angels and demons? Heaven and Hell won't like that if they find out.
I do like the idea of an established trade route, though. Sending you Earthly goods and tasting more unique food and drink from your Hell. [Crowley nodded to the bottle of scotch.] Quite uniquely tasty, that! Even if the Scotsmen will tell you it's not real scotch, I think it's quite good!
You'll have to let me know what interests you to try, and I'd be happy to send some goodies along. Though, I'll warn you- [ with a specific glance to Aziraphale ] -if you're going to request literature, just... remember where it's coming from. I can offer you books just as they are, so you get the real experience, or I can try to, ah... attempt to steer towards safer options.
[ His gaze went thoughtful as he debated, then shifted back enough to have his lap available to him. With a sweep of a finger, creating as he went, he tried a few different sized cubes before he picked something large enough and tall enough to reasonably hold several items. It built in gold light, he concentrated closely on creating a door with an ornate lock in the shape of an apple and curled filigree.
Inside, he used the tip of a claw to draw a circle, then sealed it with his sigil mixed into a rune of summoning. On the outside, he made it beautifully carved in intertwining branches and leaves, centered around a golden wood apple. He studied his creation, then when he was pleased, gave a hearty tap with his finger atop the box.
It sprang into existence in his lap. ]
There we go! An easier solution! Anything you put into that box will appear in a matching box for me... I just need your sigil, Aziraphale.
I do love books! Any and all books, even if the unsavoury ones are no fun to read...
Pornography's not his thing. So uh... might leave that out. But he does collect misprints of bibles. A hobby of his. If you have any of those floating about.
[They both watched in awe as Lucifer crafted out the box in magic before bringing it to life. Sure, they could materialise things, but the way Lucifer went about it was just so much more elegant and beautiful. Just as beautiful as the finished product.]
Oh! Right, of course! Crowley, if you wouldn't mind, my dear? [He offered the demon another slip of parchment. Said demon took it but just gave the angel a look.] Please? I don't do the whole bit with the fire like you and I didn't bring a pen. You've forged it enough to know it by heart.
Seriously? Angel, you can just--I can just miracle you a pen! [But at the puppy-dog look from the angel, Crowley sighed with a hint of exaggerated irritation then burned a symbol into the paper that resembled a flaming sword with the tip pointed to the right side of the paper and some Enochian. The angel's official "signature". This slip of paper didn't have the pager infused magic, but it would work as a reference for summoning purposes.]
I do have a single bible of my own, believe it or not. A little 'gift' that someone gave me about two thousand years ago, give or take. I have no idea if it's the same as yours, but! I'm willing to send it along if you're willing to trade a bible from your world so we could read and compare. I only ask you take good care of it, as no other copies of it from that era exist... but I know you'll do that. [ Proof of just how willing he was to trust Aziraphale with this artifact. ]
I can tell you flat out that there's plenty of bullshit in it, though. History is written by the winners, as they say. [ Lucifer's lips tighten before he shrugged. An old hurt, but not one it was worth thinking too hard on... right now.
When the paper was handed over, he studied it and committed it to memory, then pulled the paper with Crowley's own. Placing his palm atop, he spoke in his true tongue quietly as he set the magical protection. ]
פתוח לאף נפש אחרת מזו. תעבוד למען נפש אחרת מלבד אלה. הסתר את המטרה האמיתית שלך מכל האחרים.
[ Holding his other hand out, down towards the floor, the box trembled in the air, faster and faster, then pop! A duplicate appeared on the floor under Lucifer's hand with one change - inside, it bore their respective sigils instead of his own. With a pleased smile, he repeated the spell over the new box. ]
פתוח לאף נפש אחרת מלבדי או הבת שלי. תעבוד למען נפש אחרת מלבד עצמי או הבת שלי. הסתר את המטרה האמיתית שלך מכל האחרים.
I will take good care of it. Books from the human world is so rare that they’re precious, though sometimes I can swing someone to go through for me, but I have to know what I want or get very lucky they have decent tastes in books. [ He looked amused at the whole thing, even if it was a bit of a sad notion over all. ]
It should disguise itself as something ordinary to blend in to anyone but the two of you. A stack of books or something like that.
[ He gave Crowley a sideways grin at the compliment, then handed their half of the pair over to the other fallen. ] It won’t unlock for anyone besides either of you as well, so hopefully it’ll remain undetected.
[Something lit up in Aziraphale's eyes.] Tell me, what kind of books do you enjoy? I could always procure copies of the like and send them along!
[Crowley shook his head fondly at the two. Films were his thing, not so much the books. But he could appreciate that someone shared the angel's passion.
He took the box handed to him and looked over the intricate details more.]
Ohh, a perception filter! I like it! Let's hope any certain Archangels can't see through clever magic. I doubt they can, but I like to be healthily paranoid. I'll still insist we keep it back in the loft, just to be certain.
All of it! I love learning more about the human world, even if perhaps less so the people in it. Their stories... that is where I see hope. That there is some creative spark in their souls to create such imaginative things.
[ Raising a brow at Crowley, Lucifer upturned a hand and shrugged. ] Realistically, an archangel shouldn't be able to see through another archangel's spell... equal power.
[ He had safely assumed that Crowley was similar to himself - another archangel. Perhaps hidden in name, given what they had mentioned before, but either way he wouldn't question the other on it. ] Then again, I'm still mostly naive to this world and how everything interacts.
Oh! That's delightful! Then I have so many books to collect and send your way! They're a bit of a hobby of mine!
[That was a secret he'd carry with him for the rest of his days if he could help it. But regardless of how high on the Heavenly food chain he'd been before his Fall, it didn't change that Gabriel pretty much ran Heaven and therefore, was a deal more powerful than most others just under Metatron. He would never presume where Lucifer's power level fell on the scale. He'd been God's favourite up until his rebellion, so Crowley had a feeling he was probably one of, if not the strongest. Still, better safe than sorry.]
Nothing against your power, I'm just--
--Crowley's paranoia has kept him one step ahead of the game for millennia, you see. It's become a habit of his. No harm intended, I assure you. [Aziraphale supplied with a warm smile.]
No, no, I understand! ...I understand. I'd still keep it out of sight, but at least it has some defense just in case. [ He offered a sympathetic smile, then leaned over and put his box on the floor beside him. ]
Otherwise... I will think on how to mask our angel here, though it may have to be both of you. There are no sinners that look so... human. I might be able to tap into something... [ Tapping his own chin with a thoughtful look, he hummed at the back of his throat. ] That just might work.
Don't forget, you're not the only shapeshifter here. The angel might need a mask but give me a template to work with and I can cover myself.
[Crowley flicked his serpent's tongue out playfully. He was a lot more free with his form than his angel. But Lucifer had given him a small glimpse of his Hell when he showed Crowley he Exterminations. Still, which of those were sinners and which were hellborn, he wasn't sure.]
What do you have in mind? [The angel asked curiously.]
[ Lucifer gave a smirk to Crowley - that point was true enough. ] Well, for us, there is something out there we call Judgment. An unknown entity to both Heaven and Hell, but it judges a soul and when the soul rises or descends, it takes on a changed form. I... didn't always look like this. [ The brief smile was certainly bitter, but he pushed on. ]
There is a certain, shall we say, pattern that falls with sinners. Typically marked by the manner of their death, for example. We can use that to craft a form for you. ...Though it will be interesting to create something fair to you. Maybe you have an idea, Crowley?
[ That look in Lucifer's eyes? Oh, that was certainly mischief, giving Crowley the chance to offer out what his angel's form might take. ]
Well, might as well wear my title with pride. [The demon's form shifted a bit, eyes going full gold with his trademark slitted pupil. His tattoo moved down to his lapel as his skin took on a scaly texture, exaggerating his serpentine features. His hands scorched black like his wings when he Fell and ended in claws, much like Lucifer's. Little cliché demon horns grew from his scalp and a pair of fangs elongated past his lips. The forked tongue flicked out, tasting the air periodically. Usually, he kept his tongue in check, but if he was embracing his serpent's nature it wouldn't hurt.] Probably sssshouldn't call myssself Original Ssssin, but thisss ssshould work.
Oh, my dear, you look quite demonic. But I must say, I'm surprised you didn't go with an aardvark. [The angel quipped with a knowing smile.]
An aardvark? Why would I--ohhh. Right. [Crowley mused then regarded the angel more carefully with Lucifer's question.] Mmm, I think if anything were to be your end as a human, it would be an avalanche of books. But we can't very well turn you into a book. [If only you knew, Crowley...] You always had a bit of a soft spot for the Queen's Welsh Corgis. I think a pair of dopy ears and a nubby tail might suit you well, Angel. What do you think, Luci? Perhaps the book that does you in would poetically be a biography on Her Majesty, the Queen of England? That could tie in, I'd say.
...I know there must be a story behind "aardvark" and you've both got me quite curious. However, that's a perfect look for you for my Hell, Crowley. [ Lucifer chuckled at the idea, trying to imagine Crowley as an aardvark. ] I would avoid the 'original sin' title given the situation. Crowley is just fine.
[ Tilting his gaze to Aziraphale, he did the 'so-so' gesture before suggesting- ] Perhaps we should stick to 'Az' while you're there? Just in case... that name just sings of 'angel'.
[ At Crowley's suggestions, Lucifer closed his eyes and began to imagine what it would look like. Aziraphale's general build to begin with, then remove the human ears and put the large ears of a corgi. An elongated canine face, though making everything more rounded to match the angel's facial structure. The gold fur would be odd... instead, crimson fur with a gold tinge. At the suggestion of a queen, a tiny golden crown tucked between the ears and a broad metallic collar in gold and black. The hands more paw-like, the upraised ankles like himself but with broad enough paws that he would have the balance of a foot. The angel's outfit, but in shade of grey with a black coat. A split in the pants and coat to allow for the stubby tail. ...Yes, that would do.
His eyes opened and he winked towards Crowley before he flicked his fingers at Aziraphale. It was purely cosmetic, so the angel would feel no differently, but Crowley and himself would see the outcome. ]
A quip from a couple millennia ago when we were just becoming friends. I tried to spur polite conversation with a terrible icebreaker.
He asked if I was still a demon. Like, what the bloody else would I be?
He told me it was a stupid question and asked what else would he be? An aardvark? [Aziraphale chuckled.]
Now that will be the hardest part when we visit. Not calling you Angel. [He smirked and moved to the barrier, looking the angel over with his new demonic disguise. He looked amused and clicked his tongue.]
Well, well. Lookit you! [He miracled a mirror for the angel and the blonde squawked in abject horror.]
My clothes! [He squeaked in distress.] It looks as if you've dressed me, Crowley!
[The serpent couldn't stifle the laugh, beaming at Lucifer. A job well done, he'd say!]
[ The explanation was as silly as he expected, making Lucifer laugh as he leaned back in his chair. ]
It seems like both of you were more than a bit awkward back then. Yet... I'm impressed you attempted it and stayed friends all this time. Almost as if Fate decreed your friendship to be so.
[ Aziraphale's reaction made Lucifer laugh all over again. ] It's your clothing, just in greys and black! [ The smile from Crowley got him to grin, stretching his arms up as if to say 'no big deal'. ]
Back then? He's still awkward. [Crowley quipped and the angel rolled his eyes but still smiled fondly.] But, I suppose if Fate was to decree anything, I'm glad it was this.
It may very well be my clothing, but the colour palette is horrendous! I look so... drab and depressing!
You look fine, Angel. Remember the last time you were fussy over your attire? You were nearly discorporated. [The angel puffed out his cheeks but didn't argue further. Crowley made a sort of mental note of his own form shift then morphed back to normal.]
Could be worse, you know. [ There was that mischief again, puffing his claws on the front of his coat and looking at them as if it was no big deal. ]
I could have changed you into an incubus. Then I would have had to make your clothing match their aesthetic which, let me tell you, is unusually black, leather, and very skimpy. Designed to advertise their 'goods'.
Though you strike me much more as one of the baphomets than an incubus.
[The angel flustered and floundered at the suggestion of being made into an incubus.]
I-I-I hardly think that's befitting of-of an angel! I-I would never go out in public so scantily clad!
Oh, relax, Angel. Your dignity's been spared by our gracious host. But, I do wonder how we're going to hide that glowing beacon of holiness. At least I feel infernal. Thoughts?
[ Aziraphale's reaction was exactly what Lucifer thought it would be from his little teasing, making Lucifer grin fiercely. ]
But while you're in Hell, you're not an angel! [ He continued to tease, but not as strongly. How could he resist? Yet Crowley's point about the angel was an important blockade on this possibility. With a wave of his fingers, he dismissed the illusion on Aziraphale before he looked to Crowley. ]
Now, isn't that the question? I have a theory we might be able to leverage... if you're willing, Crowley. I could take some of your magic and create a pendant that Aziraphale can wear. It would fill out the illusion and he would feel like you, but that's a lot better than him feeling like me.
[The angel didn't look any more at ease being told that. Even if he wouldn't look angelic, he was still an angel! The very idea that he would be anything but was terrifying so he chose not to even entertain it! ...oh, but that was him being speciesest in a sense, wasn't it? Racist? Did demons count as their own species or race? Either way, it was rude! And though it never seemed to bother Crowley that much, he hated thinking that way for Crowley's sake!
Unaware of his angel's internal turmoil, Crowley faced Lucifer fully and considered that idea. It made sense and was likely a lot easier than his idea.]
Sounds like a plan! How do I go about giving you some of my magic? [He'd hate to pluck another feather from his prefect wings, but he'd do it for his angel.]
[ Given that Crowley seemed calm about the idea, and he far more trusted the other fallen about the angel's acceptance of what they were doing, he assumed everything was alright with his idea. ]
Well, just let me... [ He concentrated, reimagining the design he produced for Aziraphale's disguise, then focused specifically on the black and gold collar. With a little pop! of displaced air, it appeared in his hands with one small adjustment. Now it had a repeating pattern of swords, some pointed up, some pointed down, among the filigree- except for the center. That one stood alone in the center of the collar, pointed down, and the filigree had become flames around that sword alone. ]
There we go! One perfect vessel for our trickery. [ Lucifer turned it around to show Aziraphale, raising a brow towards the angel. ] I know it isn't your colors, but thinking the change in design might put you more at ease?
[The fussy angel was pulled from his internal panic, looking at the newly designed collar, features softening some.]
Well, I will say it is more in line with my calling card.
[Crowley smiled warmly at the added symbol. Angel of the Eastern Gate, though most probably wouldn't know that's what the flaming sword stood for. The very same sword he'd given away to Adam and Eve for protection. Even if it was now tied to War, the sword still belonged to Aziraphale.]
[ Nope! Lucifer had no clue what it meant, though it reminded him of his brother's holy blade, a connection he was trying hard not to think about. It was very clear that Aziraphale was not this world's version of his brother, thank goodness. ]
Crowley, you can put your hand on the collar and... [ Oh how to explain... ] Ah! Imagine a dry river, one that starts at you, goes down your arm, and connects to an empty lake inside the collar. Your own magic is like another lake but full. Break open a little dam of earth and in your mind, see your magic flow down the river and out into the empty lake. It certainly isn't a lake bigger than your own, so it will fill quickly!
[Crowley covered the top of the collar with one hand, following the thought process Lucifer laid out for him. It was different than just snapping his fingers and filling the lake. More along the vein of when he detoxified his corporation of alcohol to sober up. He focused, feeling the tingling warmth flow past the dam and into the vessel of the collar. Filling a lake. Or, in this case, a puddle, he mused. Wisps of glittering red and gold slithered down his arm like snakes, pooling into the collar. He'd closed his eyes to visualise better, but hearing Aziraphale's soft little gasp encouraged him to open his eyes. The ethereal being had moved closer to the barrier to watch. Strangely enough, a golden and baby blue glow outlined Aziraphale's form, his own holy magic reacting to the raw form of Crowley's. Even more strange was that it didn't feel violent. More just... drawn to it. Like the two powers wanted to be one. Crowley's magic tasted like fire and ash, hint of sulphur that had burned through his very being when he Fell, and a hint of sweet apple. While Aziraphale's was more like a the damp earth of a rain shower, a hint of ozone, fresh parchment, and a sweet floral note.]

Sounds like a plan! How do I go about giving you some of my magic? [He'd hate to pluck another feather from his prefect wings, but he'd do it for his angel.]

Date: 2024-06-15 10:24 pm (UTC)Well, just let me...

[Crowley smiled warmly at the added symbol. Angel of the Eastern Gate, though most probably wouldn't know that's what the flaming sword stood for. The very same sword he'd given away to Adam and Eve for protection. Even if it was now tied to War, the sword still belonged to Aziraphale.]

Date: 2024-06-16 12:02 am (UTC)Crowley, you can put your hand on the collar and...
